What is the Cédula?

Your ID card in Paraguay.

The Cédula de Identidad is the ID card issued to Paraguayans and to foreigners with residency. It is issued by the identification department of the Policía Nacional. You need granted residency from the migration authority first.

Its validity follows your residency: with temporary residency the Cédula is valid for its two-year term. With permanent residency you receive a new Cédula that is valid for ten years.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Cédula

Can I get a Cédula without residency?

No. Foreigners receive the Cédula only after the migration authority has granted their residency.

How long does it take to get the Cédula?

After the residency application, processing usually takes about six months, or 90 days at the earliest with fast-track. The Cédula is issued afterwards. The exact times are set by the authorities.

Do I have to travel to Paraguay again for the Cédula?

That depends on the authorities’ schedule. We plan appointments so you need as few trips as possible and tell you what to expect in your consultation.

What happens to the Cédula after two years?

It expires with your temporary residency. With permanent residency you receive a new Cédula valid for ten years. More on permanent residency

Does the Cédula make me a citizen?
